The slopes here are very much the main attraction and these are served by a good network of fast lifts.

All of the terrain is wooded, providing excellent shelter in bad weather – which is very useful as the resort boasts an impressive 10m of snowfall a year on average. As with many Japanese resorts, off piste skiing is limited, but many runs are left un-groomed after fresh snowfall and tree-skiing is allowed at the top of the mountain – so head here as soon as possible after a fresh dump of powder.

The resort itself is also a major attraction thanks to its renowned hot springs, which were discovered in the 8th Century. With traditional ryokan inns and narrow cobbled streets, this resort really gives you an authentic Japanese skiing experience, a contrast from a much larger resorts such as Niseko.

Getting here is easy from the city of Nagano, which is only a couple of hours from Tokyo via bullet train.

A brief patch of milder weather puts a temporary halt to the madness that has been Jappow this winter. Temperatures will briefly tip into positive at mid-mountain level on Honshu, whilst Hokkaido stays below freezing for this period.

The madness resumes unabated, however, as the week concludes. Steady snowfall hits Honshu as temperatures drop, building to a big dump of a foot of snow on Sunday. Further north, temperatures fall off a cliff, with steady snowfall totalling about a foot of the silly soft stuff between Thursday night and Sunday evening.
