San Cassiano

One of the smallest, prettiest and quietest villages with access to the Sella Ronda circuit. It is also part of the Alta Badia and Dolomiti Superski areas.

Individual runs are short - verticals of more than 500m are rare, while runs of under 300m are not.
The local San Cassiano ski area has predominantly easy intermediate slopes.

Beginners must take the gondola out of the resort to access the beginner’s slopes. There are lots of gentle blues on offer for progressing beginners and intermediates. Those intermediates who wish to venture further have the whole of the Dolomiti Superski area at their disposal. The excellent hidden valley run is easy to access. Corvara is also close by and has plenty of blues and reds to tackle. Options for advanced skiers are limited in San Cassiano itself but there is no shortage of options in the rest of the Dolomiti Superski area.

Arabba is easy to get to and has some excellent steep on piste and off piste terrain.

San Cassiano has some very smart and comfortable hotels. Brunico is the closest airport to San Cassiano. The closest large airport is Venice which is two hours away by road.

Italy will barely benefit from the Nordstau conditions dominating through the middle of this week across the rest of the Alps, sitting as it does on the wrong side (for perhaps the first time this season) of the Main Alpine Ridge. It will not be without cold and snow, however, as the same cold conditions do make it over the Alps; in msot palces the freezing line drops from above 2,000m early this week to seas level by close of play on Thursday.

A few flurries will make it through; the best of this will be on higher ground closer to the ridge, with around 20cm expected down at Cervinia over the course of Wednesday and Thursday. This will be reduced to a few flurries in the Via Lattea or over the Dolomites.

A brief burst of sunshine follows for many areas, before the last few tails of cloud bring with them some more snow into the new week; it remains too early to tell exactly when and where this will fall, and how much, but the southwest seems to be getting the best of it.
