Schladming is a resort steeped in ski racing history – it hosts the famous night slalom each winter – but with a pretty medieval town and four mountains of skiing to choose from, there is much more to this resort than just a ski race.

The four mountains provide a 123km network of well-prepared, linked pistes, served by a modern and fast fleet of lifts.

Most of the terrain is suited to intermediates, but there are some challenges for more advanced skiers and riders, as well as some decent beginner facilities – particularly at Rohrmoos.

Schladming itself has an attractive, car-free town centre and it certainly can get lively, especially at the end of the ski day.

On the Slopes

Most pistes are on the wooded north-facing slopes above the main valley, with some going into the side valleys higher up. Above the treeline there are some short open slopes, but these are few and far between. Almost all are linked by fast lifts, most of which have bubbles and many are also equipped with seat heating.

Beginners should head to the gentle slopes of Rohrmoos, but there is also a good Kinderland on the Planai. Most of the rest of the ski area is primed for intermediates and keen piste skiers, with the mountains criss-crossed by a network of reds and blues. Advanced and expert skiers will struggle to find much for them unless there has been good snowfall – this is when the tree runs come into their own.

In the Resort

Most of Schladming’s buildings are traditional and at the village’s heart there’s a pleasant, traffic-free main square. It is around here that the majority of the bars, restaurants and hotels are located. Families may consider basing themselves by Rohrmoos to be near to the best beginner slopes.
Schladming is a lively resort and never more so than during the night slalom race each January, when tens of thousands of ski racing fans descend on the resort. Even without the racers in town however, the resort is very lively and in the form of the Hohenhaus Tenne, it is home to the largest après ski lodge in the Alps.

Getting to Schladming

A transfer will only take an hour from Salzburg, making this one of the best resorts for a weekend break. You can also take the train direct to Schladming – this takes around an hour and a half. Innsbruck and Munich are around three hours away.

After a pretty desperate season, bumper conditions finally – finally – arrive for Austria, as it experiences its first Nortstau event of the season through the middle of this week.

Unsettled conditions drifting in from the north will bring with it cold temperatures as the freezing line takes a long walk off a short pier; from a daytime high of 2,400m on Wednesday it will plummet to sea level by Friday morning.

These unsettled conditions will of course mean snow, with good snowfall hitting the Austrian Alps on Wednesday afternoon and continuing steadily until Friday morning; this will see around 45cm fall, particularly focused across higher ground as the freezing line works its way down the elevation chart steadily over this period. Around 25cm will fall on Thursday alone.

Expect the avalanche risk to increase over this period as this new snowfall sits on either wet ground, wet snow, or a spring freeze-thaw crust; plan your backcountry routes carefully, and check your local avalanche forecast before heading out.

Sun returns with gusto on Saturday, before the last few flurries of cloud and snow move in over Sunday and the new week.
