Selva is the largest town in Val Gardena and is located on the northeast corner of the Sella Ronda Massif.

A vital link in the famous 26km circuit lies just above the resort and there is direct access via two gondolas to either the clockwise or anticlockwise loop. There is also direct access to the Saslong Mountain, home each year to a fearsome World Cup Downhill race, as well as the high Seceda slopes above St Ortesei. Most runs are suited to intermediates and snow reliability issues are long gone – the entire piste network is covered by an extremely powerful snowmaking system.

The scenery around town is spectacular, with towering Dolomite peaks providing the backdrop for the pretty, traditional, mostly wood-clad town of Selva Gardena. Alternative bases are on offer at St Ortesei or St Cristina further down the valley.

On the Slopes

The east-facing beginner area is located just on the edge of the village of Selva and is a good place to learn, but this is a walk or a short bus ride away from some accommodation. Longer blues are hard to come by, but some of the more gentle reds will be in reach of less confident intermediates. Keen piste skiers and adventurous intermediates will love exploring the vast network of slopes surrounding the Sella Ronda Massif.

In comparison to some other sectors, the slopes around Val Gardena are somewhat steeper, especially on the Saslong Mountain – where the racetrack in particular is a serious challenge. The long reds at Seceda are a blast when freshly groomed and some decent off piste opens up around the valley after heavy snowfall.

In the Resort

With a long history of this part of the Italian Dolomites being in Austrian hands, there is a distinctly Tirolean feel to the resort, reflected not only in the look of the place, but the menus in the restaurants and also by the fact that many of the locals speak German as a first language. Staying in the centre of Selva of the resort affords maximum convenience and the quickest access to the main circuit. Further down the valley, St Ortesei and St Cristina offer good alternative locations.
Food plays a big part in the Val Gardena ski holiday experience. Not only are there excellent restaurants in town serving Sudtirol specialities, but on the hill there are some very good mountain restaurants. These won’t break the bank either, unlike at some other major ski resorts.

Green Credentials

Ski Club Recognised: Environmentally Sustainable Resort

The Ski Club uses third party independent assessments and accreditation of ski resorts to determine a resort “environmentally sustainable” – more information can be found here.

Val Gardena has received certification from the Global Sustainability Tourism Council (GSTC) as a sustainable tourist destination, requiring the a destination to meet criteria across four areas, including sustainable management, socio-economic sustainability, cultural sustainability, and environmental sustainability.

The GSTC is a UN-affiliated body dedicated to enabling sustainable tourism around the world. GSTC certification is controlled by Vireo, an Italian for-profit certification and licencing organisation that manages several similar schemes. Val Gardena was awarded its certificate in 2023, which expires in 2026.

Good snowfall for many areas tapers off sharply as the new week begins; the Via Lattea will see a few last remaining flurries as the sun begins to fight its way through, and the freezing line beginning to pick up and move towards a more spring-like freeze-thaw pattern. Elsewhere, the Aosta sees half-a-foot of snow on higher ground on Tuesday with flurries continuing on to Wednesday; the freezing line will stay well below 1,000m, too, ensuring this snow reaches all elevations.

Thursday will see good snow good snow come to most areas, with at least 10cm down over western areas. The Dolomites will see excellent snow really for the first time this season, with around 40cm expected down on thursday – things remain cool, too, with the freezing line sitting at around 1,500m, meaning snow will reach all but the lowest elevations. Sun returns to this part of the region, with spring-like freeze-thaw patterns beginning to form as the weekend continues.

Cloud remains the theme of the week throughout the rest of the country.
