The Czech Republic's premier resort of Spindleruv Mlyn is great for beginners, or families looking for a varied and good value ski holiday.

A lot of money has recently been piled in to this small resort nestled in the pretty Giant Mountains on the border with Poland.

New chairlifts (with more planned in the future), new snow machines and new hotels have made this a much more attractive resort in recent years. The ski area is still a little limited, suiting beginners and intermediates best, but if you like lapping tree-lined pistes or if you’re looking for high-quality, good value instruction, then Spindleruv Mlyn is a great choice.

Off the slopes, the variety of what’s on offer has improved markedly in recent years. Several smart hotels have been built to add to the rustic selection of older hotels, plus lots of off slopes activities have been added, including cross country and winter walking trails. Prague is only two hours away, making this a quick transfer and giving you the opportunity to tie in a ski trip with some culture in one of the world’s most beautiful old cities.

For most of Eastern Europe and the Balkans, mild and fine, dry and bright conditions will dominate across this week and into the weekend. Temperatures will remain mostly the wrong side of freezing throughout this period.

A few flurries of unsettled weather will move in through the middle of this week, falling as rain in northern areas but perhaps as snow to the East – albeit barely enough to register on the snow stake.
