St Christoph lies at a lofty 1800m and is conveniently located in one of the Alps' snowiest places, the Arlberg, meaning snow reliability is not an issue here.

A fast quad takes skiers and boarders to Galzig, right at the heart of the St Anton ski area and with blues back into resort at the end of the day, this is one of the more gentle parts of the ski area famed for its extensive off piste and steep terrain. It is also very quick to get across to Lech and Zürs via the Ahlenmähder chair and the Flexenbahn gondola.

The resort itself is barely more than a hamlet home to a handful of hotels, including one of the Alps’ best hotels, the Arlberg Hospiz. Prices are high, but with that you get incredible facilities, a world-class restaurant and real old-school Austrian luxury. Getting here is simple, either drive from Innsbruck airport or catch the train to St Anton – the former takes around 75 minutes, with the latter a little longer.

Brief flurries of snowfall open the weekend for many areas in Austria, the best conditions found in the south and east of the region where up to 20cm can be found on higher slopes over the course of Friday and into Saturday. Further north and west, and this is reduced to a few centimetres.

All this is helped by a friendly freezing line, starting the weekend anchored nicely around 2,000m, dropping off overnight perhaps as low as 1,500m. This will rise gently over the course of the new week as sun moves in to dominate, reaching 3,000m in the midday sun by the middle of the new week.
