Sugarloaf is a very well-developed resort, located in the pretty mountains of Maine.

The north-facing mountain holds its snow well and thanks to comprehensive snowmaking, snow reliability has improved significantly in recent years. There’s a good pod of beginner terrain at the foot of the mountain, with longer blues and some steeper tree-runs further up the hill, just note that the lift system is a little antiquated. The jewel in the crown however for experts is the cat-skiing, operated by the resort itself, which runs on Burnt Mountain to access an extensive area of un-groomed steep terrain.

There is a good selection of accommodation at the foot of the hill, ranging from family-friendly condos located right on the slopes, to several hotels with good facilities. There are also some decent restaurant options, including a microbrewery, but if you’re staying in a condo, pick up some supplies on the way up to the resort and self-cater.

Getting here requires a 2.5 hour drive from Portland, or a 4 hour trip up from Boston, but the drive is fairly easy, utilising interstate highways for much of the route.

Bitterly cold temperatures across the Left Coast through the beginning of this forecast period, before this freeze will ease as the week reaches its conclusion and the weekend begins. Flurries of snow will also fall on most areas including around 10cm in the Tetons, by far the highest totals in the region. Moving forward, temperatures remain mild with more sun bursting through in many places.

On the ice Coast, extremely mild temperatures take a long walk off a short pier on Wednesday night, with the freezing line dropping from a steady 3,000m to sea level in an instant. This will drop temperatures on Thursday but they will steadily recover towards the end of the week and into the weekend. A few flurries of snow will mov in over weekend evenings, helping freshen up slopes after a period of mild weather.
