The base of the mountain is perfectly set up for beginners,

with rope tows, magic carpets and an excellent ski school forming an excellent combination for learners. There is then great progression on to longer greens in Sugar Bowl and longer blues in Curvey Basin – with both zones served by fast six-seater chairs. Those looking for a steeper challenge will love the terrain off the Shadow Basin quad, which include a number of long off piste routes back down to bus stops along the access road – perfect for days after fresh snowfall.

There are also excellent terrain park facilities in Sugar Bowl.

A huge amount of money has been spent upgrading the base lodge, which sits impressively at the foot of the slopes and is home to all the facilities you need for a day on the hill. In terms of where to stay, the resort sits 45 minutes from the heart of Queenstown, so most people base themselves down there. Accommodation is plentiful, with lots of budget options available, including numerous backpacker hostels and campsites. Away from the slopes, Queenstown is renowned as an extreme sports centre, allowing you to give bungee jumping, sky diving or jet-boating a go on a morning away from the slopes.

Flying to Queenstown via either Christchurch or Auckland gives you the quickest access to the mountains. We’d recommend having a car however, as this will give you an option to visit a number of different resorts nearby (such as Cardrona, Coronet Peak and Treble Cone).
