Voss is a fully functioning town with the great outdoors as its lifeblood,

which makes staying here much more of a lively experience than at some of Norway’s other major ski resorts. It is also very easy to get to and from Bergen, especially following completion of the Hangursbanen 3S gondola as you can now hop off the train from Bergen and straight on to the ski lift. The network of pistes is fairly compact, but there is something for all abilities and the touring possibilities are limitless – hire a guide to experience the mountains around Voss to their fullest. Nearby Myrkdalen is linked by regular bus services and is well worth a visit if you’re coming here for more than a few days.

Pros and cons

A great weekend destination from the UK and very easy to access
Compact ski area that is excellent for first timers in particular
Spectacular fjords and scenery can be found at every turn

Prone to long spells of bad weather
Local ski area limited for keener skiers – make sure you also go to Myrkdalen.

On the Slopes

The local slopes are extremely varied despite its size – for example the main high-speed quad has top to bottom green, blue, red and black runs. Many of these are floodlit to help through the winter and to add in the attraction of night skiing to the Voss armoury. Despite this, the area is best suited to beginners, who will love the dedicated children’s learning area and the shelter provided by the tree-lined slopes. Access to the slopes from the heart of town has been drastically improved this year by the new 3S gondola.

Although there are some challenging slopes, especially pistes 6 and 19, keen intermediates upwards will find the extent of the area somewhat limited. But this is mitigated by the vast ski touring potential of the region and the short distance to nearby Myrkdalen – where another 30km of slopes are available, accessed by two fast 6-seater chairlifts.

In the Resort

The town of Voss has a permanent population of more than 14,000 people and it has a great buzz to it, even in winter – summer is definitely high season here.
Lots of cafes, bars and restaurants can be found in the town centre, and although Norway is expensive you’re paying regular prices here rather than inflated ski resort prices. At weekends in particular the après ski at the foot of the slopes can become lively.
There are some bigger hotels in town as well as a good deal of self-catered cabins on the slopes next to the quad chairlift. Now the new gondola is open, staying in town is as convenient as staying on the slopes. Off the slopes there is huge network of cross country trails and you can even try indoor skydiving at Vossvind.

A very cold and snowy start to the New Year for northern areas, with good totals falling on New Year’s Eve-Eve (i.e., today, 30th January). Things ten remain cold but turn drier across Northern Norway and Lapland, with daytime highs perhaps edging up close to, erm, -20°C … right.

The central highlands follows this model, too, with cold conditions turning even colder as the week continues. More snowfall is expected across the middle of this week, however, with around 20cm expected down before Friday. Further South, things remain dry and comparatively mild with daytime highs of -10°C, and only a few flurries of snow to see in the New Year.
