If you're looking for weekend convenience, stunning views over the northern Alps and well groomed pistes, Waidring is a good option.
The 42km of slopes on the Steinplatte are almost all rated blue or red, with little in the way of challenges for more advanced skiers, aside from the black piste 8. All however are wide and thanks to their northerly aspect and comprehensive snowmaking system, usually hold decent snow despite their relatively low altitude. The lift system is excellent, with high-capacity chairlifts dominant, but note that the resort is prone to weekend queues.
The small village is well located at the foot of the access gondola and has a number of small, family-run hotels to choose from. Note however that you will need to download at the end of the day, or if you’d rather ski back down to your car, drive to the base of the Kammenkörbahn and catch the lift up from there. The valley is home to a number of cross country trails, so pack a pair of nordic skis for your trip too. Getting here is exceptionally easy from Salzburg (50 minute drive) and Innsbruck (90 minute drive), making this one of the most accessible resorts in the Alps.

After a pretty desperate season, bumper conditions finally – finally – arrive for Austria, as it experiences its first Nortstau event of the season through the middle of this week.
Unsettled conditions drifting in from the north will bring with it cold temperatures as the freezing line takes a long walk off a short pier; from a daytime high of 2,400m on Wednesday it will plummet to sea level by Friday morning.
These unsettled conditions will of course mean snow, with good snowfall hitting the Austrian Alps on Wednesday afternoon and continuing steadily until Friday morning; this will see around 45cm fall, particularly focused across higher ground as the freezing line works its way down the elevation chart steadily over this period. Around 25cm will fall on Thursday alone.
Expect the avalanche risk to increase over this period as this new snowfall sits on either wet ground, wet snow, or a spring freeze-thaw crust; plan your backcountry routes carefully, and check your local avalanche forecast before heading out.
Sun returns with gusto on Saturday, before the last few flurries of cloud and snow move in over Sunday and the new week.
