As the entrance to the Zillertal Arena ski area, Zell am Ziller makes for a great base from which to explore one of Austria’s top ski areas.

143km of linked slopes, rising to a snowsure altitude of 2500m, can be found in the ski area above Zell am Ziller

a sizeable town located a short bus trip away from the slopes. These are linked by an impressive lift system – rarely will you ever have to ride a slow chair. Most of the terrain suits intermediate skiers and keen explorers will enjoy the sense of travel gained by skiing via Gerlos to the end resort of Königsleiten.

On the Slopes

Almost two-thirds of the pistes in the Zillertal Arena are rated red, suggesting this is a vast intermediate playground – which it certainly is. Strong intermediates should be able to explore the entire area, but less confident skiers and boarders may find Piste 36 down to the Möseltret chairlift linking Gerlos and Königsleiten too much of a challenge – catch the bus from Gerlos instead.

Although the beginner area is well up the hill at Rosenalm, it is snowsure and there are excellent facilities. From here progression is slightly tricky as all the local pistes further up are rated red – your best bet would be to jump on a bus to Gerlos and ski the runs off the Ebenfeld X-Press or explore the blues on the Plattenkogel above Königsleiten. The challenges for more advanced and expert skiers or boarders are somewhat limited, although in good snow the Wilde Krimml is a good zone to head to, as is the Falschbach chair below the Königsleitenspitze.

In the Resort

The village itself is picturesque, especially so considering its size, with a cobbled square surrounded by cafés and shops, all of which have a lively buzz during the day and also at night. Après focuses on the base of the gondola at the Jogglkessl and the Saustadl, both of which get lively at the end of the skiing day, especially during the busy holiday weeks.

Getting to Zell am Ziller

The car transfer from Innsbruck is as quick as it gets, taking around an hour in clear traffic. It takes a similar time to travel by train from the centre of Innsbruck, you just need to add on an extra half an hour to get to the main station from the airport. Munich is another good option and the drive only takes two hours.
