Of the seven ski areas, Lermoos is the best known,

but there is also Ehrwald, Ehrwalder Alm, Berwang, Biberwier and access to the snowsure glacier slopes across the German border on the Zugspitze Glacier. Aside from the glacier, most of the slopes are relatively low, but snowmaking has improved snow reliability in recent years. Most of the terrain is rated blue and red, but with 147km to choose from across the various areas, there’s more than enough to keep all but the keenest expert skiers happy. Add in an impressive lift system and some smart facilities, including a number of good mountain huts and restaurants and the area’s attraction is clear.

In terms of accommodation, there are two main options – staying in Ehrwald or Lermoos. Both offer up some decent hotels and holiday apartments, plus a number of restaurants and bars, but there is very much a quiet, family-friendly vibe here as opposed to a lively après ski one. Off the slopes, there are numerous tobogganing routes, cross country trails and even if you’re not skiing, catching the cable car to the top of the Zugspitze is well worth it. Having a car here is useful, enabling you to visit each ski area, but it also makes the transfer from Innsbruck or Munich much quicker.

After a pretty desperate season, bumper conditions finally – finally – arrive for Austria, as it experiences its first Nortstau event of the season through the middle of this week.

Unsettled conditions drifting in from the north will bring with it cold temperatures as the freezing line takes a long walk off a short pier; from a daytime high of 2,400m on Wednesday it will plummet to sea level by Friday morning.

These unsettled conditions will of course mean snow, with good snowfall hitting the Austrian Alps on Wednesday afternoon and continuing steadily until Friday morning; this will see around 45cm fall, particularly focused across higher ground as the freezing line works its way down the elevation chart steadily over this period. Around 25cm will fall on Thursday alone.

Expect the avalanche risk to increase over this period as this new snowfall sits on either wet ground, wet snow, or a spring freeze-thaw crust; plan your backcountry routes carefully, and check your local avalanche forecast before heading out.

Sun returns with gusto on Saturday, before the last few flurries of cloud and snow move in over Sunday and the new week.
