ON SNOW EXPERIENCE

The terrain here in the Japanese Alps is expansive and is based around mountain ranges with long vertical descents. By basing our trip in two different destinations and potentially skiing a different ski area every day (conditions permitting) we will get a full variety of the Japanese skiing experience – world class powder and tree skiing mixed with a wonderful cultural experience. This trip is active with a focus on powder and tree skiing, combined with short skin ascents, and so requires a good level of fitness. Off piste skiing is frowned upon in some resorts but fear not; your ski club leader and local guide will take you to areas where you can access the legendary powder for which the Japanese Alps are known!

By spending half your time with your Ski Club Leader, and the other half with your mountain guides, you’ll be able to explore the ski resorts as well as getting off the beaten track.

RESORT

Hakuba

The Hakuba valley is a prime destination for both skiers and snowboarders. The area is composes of ten ski resorts: Jiigatake Snow Resort, Kashimayari Snow Resort, Hakuba Goryu Snow Resort, Hakuba47 Winter Sports Park, Hakuba Happo-one Snow Resort, Hakuba Iwatake Snow Field, Tsugaike Kogen Snow Resort, Hakuba Norikura Onsen Snow Resort, Hakuba Cortina Snow Resort, and Hakuba Sanosaka.

You will split your days exploring some of these ten resorts with your Ski Club Leader and guides.

With jagged peaks towering to almost 3000m, Hakuba offers more terrain, vertical drop and challenging terrain than any other resort in Japan.
The town of Hakuba has a great atmosphere with a wide range of bars and restaurants. There are great western options as well as the opportunity to sample some excellent Japanese food and izakayas (Japanese bars).

Nozawa Onsen

The village is full of character and offers a more genuine taste of Japan with cobbled streets, traditional bars, restaurants, shops and an impressive thirteen public onsen (thermal baths) to experience. You will be staying in a hotel with great quality traditional Japanese rooms. You may find yourself staying in rooms with traditional tatami mats or futon beds, respecting local customs such as not wearing shoes in the hotel and using the provided slippers and kimono robes to walk to the onsen all add to the experience.

ACCOMMODATION

All accommodation is on a bed and breakfast basis. in twin share rooms. You will spend seven nights in the Hakuba Mominoki Hotel in Hakuba. The hotel features western style rooms and is home to an authentic onsen (hot springs). The next five nights will be spent in the Nozawa Grand Hotel (a Japanese style hotel with some Japanese style rooms).
