The 55km of tree-lined slopes above the village of Les Houches are where the masses descend on snowy days when the upper lifts in the valley are closed,

but that doesn’t mean they’re not worth visiting if the sun is out.

The Kandahar World Cup Downhill route offers up a fantastic challenge and there’s some nice terrain off the back of Prarion in the trees on the way down towards nearby St Gervais. Of course, Les Houches also acts a great springboard to explore the rest of the Chamonix Valley, which is world-renowned for its off piste, steep skiing and touring terrain.

Les Houches’ old core is pretty and traditional, but most accommodation is located a little to the west, near the foot of the access lifts. Chalets form the bulk of what’s on offer, but there are a couple of hotels offering decent value accommodation.

On the whole Les Houches is quiet, with a relaxed vibe in the evening. If you’re looking out for active nightlife, a wide choice of restaurants and shopping opportunities, then head into Chamonix, a short bus ride away. The proximity to Chamonix means access from Geneva is easy, either by car, private/shared transfer or train.

Getting to Les Houches

Getting here from Geneva is very easy – the drive only takes an hour – so this is an excellent weekend destination. The drive from the UK is one of the quickest and shortest too.

Ski Club Recognised: Environmentally Sustainable Resort

The Ski Club uses third party independent assessments and accreditation of ski resorts to determine a resort “environmentally sustainable” – more information can be found here.

As part of the French Flocon Vert (tr. Green Snowflake) scheme, Les Houches – as part of the wider Chamonix Valley resort area – has been awarded two snowflakes out of a possible three, representing significant investment in resources to reduce its environmental impact. Flocon Vert is an independent scheme operated by Mountain Riders, which accredits resorts in France who have met twenty criteria based on environmental, social and economic sustainability; only a quarter of Flocon Vert recipients have been awarded two snowflakes – no area has been awarded three.

Les Houches & Chamonix was accredited in 2013 and renewed in 2017
Special focus was paid to educational measures taken by the resort
The reduction in emissions and transition plan away from fossil fuels has been particularly praised by the Flocon Vert scheme

The New Year dawns bright, dry and sunny as high pressure remains over much of Europe during this time. This changes rapidly as the weekend begins, with large flows of low pressure and cold air moving in from the East. This will bring excellent snow totals to much of the French Alps.

Snow will begin on Friday with around 20cm down. This will then increase to up to 1m down over higher ground, snow continuing into Sunday with another 15cm forecast. The freezing line will rise to around 2,000m throughout this period however snowfall is expected to reach lower down the hill too.

This snow will fall on a persistent weak layer and layers of facets within the snowpack that have already triggered avalanches over the festive period. Expect the avalanche warning to rise greatly in the coming days, and the snowpack to take a long time to settle – plan all back country travel and check your local avalanche forecast before heading out.

Snowfall is expected to continue in the new week after a brief flurry of sunshine on Monday, with temperatures plummeting as the freezing line hits below sea level.
