Valloire

Valloire is the best known of the Maurienne resorts internationally. It is an attractive, polished village with a strong summer trade - the Tour de France normally goes through en route for the famous Col du Galibier. It shares an extensive area of slopes with Valmeinier.

Gondolas go up to both local sectors of slopes. Sétaz has nursery slopes and restaurants at the mid-mountain junction of Thimel, on the treeline

Sétaz is essentially of red gradient, and blue as well as green runs have to wind their way down. There are a couple of just-genuine blacks served by a six-pack. The second sector, Crey du Quart, has a six-pack to the top height of 2535m above its gondola, making the link with Valmeinier and serving a much broader area of red and blue runs. At the south end of this sector, long and very gentle blue runs loop away from the lifts to take you down into the valleys that separate it from Sétaz and Valmeinier. One flank of Sétaz and most of Crey du Quart face west, and suffer from the sun. There is lots of off piste terrain.

Valloire has a good range of lodgings with many newly refurbished chalets and apartments. There are lots of highly traditional restaurants, but for lower cheese content the best bet is Chez Fred (or the hotel Patchwork). The resort is a pleasant place to spend time, and there is a reasonable range of off-slope activities, including skating and snowshoeing, alongside a Friday market.

It’s a compact village, with its main lifts a short walk from the fine old church and central square. Naturally, modern developments spread away from this central area – pretty much all in traditional chalet style.

Ski Club Recognised: Environmentally Sustainable Resort

The Ski Club uses third party independent assessments and accreditation of ski resorts to determine a resort “environmentally sustainable” – more information can be found here.

As part of the French Flocon Vert (tr. Green Snowflake) scheme, Valloire has been awarded one snowflake out of a possible three, representing investment in resources to reduce its environmental impact. Flocon Vert is an independent scheme operated by Mountain Riders, which accredits resorts in France who have met twenty criteria based on environmental, social and economic sustainability.

Diversity has been a key foundation of the economy, covering year-round tourism and support for local non-tourist industries

What must be the first Nordstau event of the year hits the Alps over the course of this week, bringing a return to winter conditions across much of the Northern French Alps. The freezing line will decline through the middle of this week, dropping close to sea level overnight Thursday into Friday.

At the same time, northerly unsettled conditions working their way in across Central and Eastern Europe brings snowfall to many areas north of the Briancon-Gap line. Over higher ground this could see as much as a foot-and-a-half through Wednesday evening and into Thursday; as the freezing line declines over this period, snow will work its way down to lower elevations, but the best conditions will remain above 2,000m.

A brief pause in the snowfall over Saturday still sees cloudy conditions dominating; a few more flurries move in over higher ground on Sunday, as the freezing line recovers to around 2,000m. The long term forecast then calls for sun and fine, dry and bright conditions to dominate as high pressure returns to the area.
