The FIS Code of Conduct has been put together to help everyone stay safe. You may find that it is a term of your insurance cover to ski within the boundaries of the FIS Code of Conduct, so make sure you read your insurance policy carefully.
- Respect for others – A skiยญer or snowยญboardยญer must beยญhave in such a way that he or she does not enยญdanยญger or prejยญuยญdice others.
- Conยญtrol of speed and skiยญing or snowยญboardยญing – Evยญery skiยญer or snowยญboardยญer must move in conยญtrol. He must adapt the speed and manยญnยญer of skiยญing or snowยญboardยญing to his perยญsoยญnยญal abilยญiยญty and to the preยญvailยญing conยญdiยญtions of terยญrain, snow and weather as well as to the denยญsiยญty of traffยญic.
- Choice of route – A skiยญer or snowยญboardยญer comยญing from beยญhind must choose his route in such a way not to enยญdanยญger skiers or snowยญboardยญers ahead
- Overtaking – A skiยญer or snowยญboardยญer may overยญtake another skiยญer or snowยญboardยญer above or beยญlow and to the right or to the left proยญvidยญed that he leaves enough space for the overยญtakยญen skiยญer or snowยญboardยญer to make any volยญunยญtary or inยญvolยญunยญtary moveยญment.
- Enยญterยญing, startยญing and movยญing upยญwards – A skier or snowboarder enยญterยญing a marked run, startยญing again afยญter stopยญping or movยญing upยญwards on the slopes must look up and down the slopes that he can do so without enยญdanยญgering himself or others.
- Stopping – Unยญless abยญsoยญluteยญly neยญcesยญsary, a skier or snowยญboardยญer must avoid stopยญping on the piste in narยญrow places or where visยญiยญbilยญiยญty is reยญstrictยญed. After a fall in such a place, a skier or snowboarder must move and clear the slope as soon as posยญsiยญble.
- Climbยญing and deยญsยญcendยญing on footย – A skiยญer or snowยญboardยญer eiยญther climbยญing or deยญsยญcendยญing on foot must keep to the side of the slope.
- Reยญspect for signs and markings – Skiers and snowยญboardยญers must reยญspect all signs and markยญings.
- Assistance – At accidents, evยญery skiยญer or snowยญboardยญer is duยญty bound to asยญsist.
- Identification – Every skier or snowboarder and witness, whether a responsible party or not, must exchange names and adยญdressยญes following an accident.
In the Event of an Accident
If you are involved in an accident, or are witness to an accident, there are several things you can do to help. This includes securing the area, administering first aid, and exchanging information for insurance purposes.
Assisting in case of an accident
- Secure the accident area
- Protect with crossed skis or planted snowboard above the injured person. If necessary post someone up the slope to give warning
First Aid
- Airway โ check it is clear
- Breathing โ check for breathing
- Circulation โ cover any wound and apply firm pressure
- Provide warmth โ give nothing to eat or drink, especially alcohol
Alert the rescue services
- Contact the resort’s emergency service โ the telephone number is normally on the piste map
- Place of accident (piste name and nearest piste marker)
- Number of people injured
- Type of injury
Establish the facts of the accident
- Names and addresses of people involved as well as witnesses
- Place, time and circumstances of accident
- Terrain, snow conditions and visibility
- Markings and signs
- Report to the police as soon as possible
