The FIS Alpine skiing world cup kicks off with its traditional season opening date high above the Austrian resort of Sรถlden. All eyes will be on this event – taking place over the weekend 28/29 October 2023 – after poor conditions result in the cancellation of not just the Sรถlden event but other along the circuit.
Adelboden and Zermatt–Cervinia also drew concern last year, after conditions at Adelboden resulted in skiers racing on a thin ribbon of artificial snow amidst an emerald green valley. The first international race, crossing the Italo-Swiss border between Zermatt and Cervinia, also had to be cancelled in 2023, so event organisers will be hoping for good conditions over the 11/12 and 18/19 November for the Men’s and Women’s competition, respectively.
Three historic races come thick and fast in the New Year, as the Men’s tour takes in stops at Wengen, Kitzbรผhel and Schladming.
The historic Lauberhornn races will take place in Wengen over the weekend 12-14 January, followed immediately by skiers pushing themselves to the limits on the Streif downhill course on Kitzbรผhel’s Hahnenkamm mountain on 19 and 20 January. Sunday 21 January will feature the Kitzbรผhel slalom, famously won by Britain’s Dave Ryding in 2022 – British racing fans will be circling the calendar to see if “The Rocket” can repeat his heroics.
Just two days later, skiers head to nearby Schladming for one of the all time great racing competitions, the Schladming Night Slalom, taking place on 24 January 2024.
The Women’s circuit features a switch from regular Canadian stopover Lake Louise to Tremblant, featuring two giant slalom events on the weekend 2/3 December 2023. Back in Europe, Cortina d’Ampezzo, one of the hosts of the 2026 Winter Olympics, features in late January with two downhill events and a super-G event.
The FIS Alpine World Cup will wrap up in Saalbach Hinterglemm over the long weekend from 16 to 23 March 2024, seeing racers from both sides of the competition compete over all four disciplines and the Crystal Globe awarded to the champions.
Back-to-back weeks in the Pyrenees kick off the 2023/24 Freeride World Tour, seeing skiers and riders pit themselves against some of the toughest lines on the mountain to impress judges with their speed, style and control.
After their visits to Baquiera/Beret and Arcalรญs – Vallnord, the FWT heads across the pond ticking off Kicking Horse, BC, Canada, before a weekend back in Europe in the indomitable Caucasus at Tetnuldi, Georgia.
Back to back weekends in the Alps sees Fieberbrunn then Verbier close out the 2023/24 tour.
