Rich Manterfield

As an IFMGA Mountain Guide I'm extremely fortunate to spend a lot of time in the mountains, doing what I love. Skiing is my real passion - whether it's hunting for untracked snow around the resort, or setting a track into a wild ski-mountaineering objective, I enjoy being on snow.

I started skiing in the Dolomites, where I spent several years working as a rep in ski resorts, showing groups of skiers around the extensive resort network. I soon started exploring off-piste, exploring some of the areas' many famous couloirs.

A stroke of good fortune intervened in my late 20's and I found myself working in Greenland, where I spent years exploring some of the wildest, most remote mountain ranges on earth, both in summer, and on skis through the winter and spring seasons. It's a serious and exacting place to work, requiring a pretty unique skill set in addition to mountain guiding, to deal with huge storms, sea-ice, and polar bears. I learnt from the local Greenlandic hunters, and the place definitely got under my skin - it's a paradise for adventurous ski-mountaineers.

In the process of qualifying as a Guide I moved back to the Alps to be closer to family, but still spend a lot of time exploring other mountain ranges, with recent ski trips to Norway and Georgia.

I'm excited for the upcoming season and look forward to skiing with you.

This information is usually sent out one week before departure. It will include your final itinerary, Freshtracks Rep contact details, and any important information relating to your transfers, flights, and accommodation, depending on what is included in your specific package.

Freshtracks holidays use a ski profiling system to ensure you’re skiing alongside members of a similar ability, creating well-matched groups and a more enjoyable experience for everyone.

We recommend reviewing the Ski Profile page below and selecting the profile you feel best represents your current skiing. The profiles are there to help us place you on the right holiday for you, so please choose honestly to ensure you get the most out of your time on the slopes.

Our Ski Profiles

If you’ve been on one Freshtracks holiday, your Rep will give you an official grading at the end of the week. This will be recorded on our system and available to view in your Ski Locker.

No, Freshtracks holidays cater to a wide range of skiing abilities, from early intermediates to advanced skiers. Each trip includes detailed information about the recommended ski level so you can choose the right holiday for your ability.

Absolutely. The majority of Freshtracks guests travel solo – in fact, 85% of our guests last winter were solo travellers. Our holidays are specifically designed to be a way to meet other passionate skiers and feel part of the group from the start.

Group dining, organised skiing and fun social activities all help to create a friendly, relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, making Freshtracks an ideal choice for anybody travelling alone.

Ski rental is not included on Freshtracks holidays and is arranged separately. That said, Ski Club of Great Britain members enjoy access to a number of ski hire discounts, which can be found on our Discounts page.

Ski Club of GB Rental Discounts

  • Touring boots and bindings
  • Ski Poles

The Touring
This holiday involves around three hours of ski touring each day, so you should be able to sustain this pace for a full week. A minimum of one week’s prior touring experience is required, along with at least a purple off piste ski grading.
Pre Trip

The best training is long weekend mountain walks. If that’s not possible, regular running or jogging works well. In the gym, focus on breathing and endurance – not strength

It is a condition of booking that you have valid and adequate snowsports insurance. It is your responsibility to ensure your policy provides cover for all the activities that you participate in during your holiday. We offer a Ski Club Insurance policy which provides the cover we require for all bookings. This policy can be found here: Ski Club Travel Insurance – Ski Club Of Great Britain.

If you decide to purchase insurance elsewhere, it is your responsibility to ensure that your policy provides cover as that of the Ski Club Insurance policy. The policy of insurance should provide cover for personal injury, death, medical and repatriation costs in the countries which you intend to visit, together with cover for loss of baggage and valuables, personal liability, delay, cancellation, curtailment, missed departure and legal expenses. The policy should also include cover against losses caused by the effects or consequences of Covid-19.

Due to the type of holidays that you will be booking with us, we also advise that your policy should include skiing off-piste without a guide. Please note, insurance premiums must be paid at the same time as booking in order for the package holiday or single service cancellation cover to be effective. It is also advised to keep your insurance details with you while you are on your holiday. If you choose to travel without adequate insurance cover, we will not be liable for any losses howsoever arising, in respect of which insurance cover would otherwise have been available.

Passport – Check your passport is in date and valid for travel by checking the entry requirements for your destination country – you can see these here: Foreign travel advice – GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

For most European destinations your passport should:

  • have a ‘date of issue’ less than 10 years before the date you arrive – if you renewed your passport before 1 October 2018, it may have a date of issue that is more than 10 years ago
  • have an ‘expiry date’ at least 3 months after the date you plan to leave the Schengen area

Check your passport meets these requirements before you travel.

NB: Beginning in October 2025, how you pass through EU border controls will change. Find out more information about EES and ETIAS here.

When venturing off piste, it is compulsory to wear an avalanche transceiver. These should be worn by every person on every all mountain, off piste and touring holiday. Anyone joining these holidays will also be required to bring their own backpack, shovel and probe.

Holiday Itinerary

It is hoped to carry out the itinerary below, but alterations may have to be made at the discretion of the guide if bad weather or snow conditions prevail.

For this traverse you’ll need to carry all your equipment with you. You can usually leave smaller items at the Campanules in Martigny – where you start and end the trip – but we recommend contacting them in advance to arrange this.

Arrival at Hotel Campanules, Martigny in the afternoon from approximately 1630, meeting with your mountain guide. Welcome, gear check, and tour briefing including safety briefing confirming exact plans for the week ahead.

A gentle warm-up day of off-piste skiing and short ski tours across the Verbier ski area, ending with a night at the iconic Mont Fort refuge – perfectly positioned in the heart of one of the Alps’ great ski areas.

Mont Fort Huts

A traverse of the Verbier and 4 Valleys ski area, taking in a long, secluded off-piste descent to the valley – where sheltered slopes often reward with excellent snow conditions. You will then stay at the Nax B&B.

NAX B&B, Le Cure

Today we cross the Grimentz and St. Luc ski areas, some of the finest lift-accessed touring in the Valais – finishing at the spectacularly positioned Hotel Weisshorn.

Hotel Weisshorn, St Luc

Today’s highlight is a long, north-east facing descent from the Bella Tolla, dropping all the way down to the Rhône Valley floor. You will then stay at the Kapital 7 Hotel.

Kapitel 7 Hotel, Raron

Using quiet, little-known resorts to thread our way through the mountains, today we link the Rhône Valley to Zermatt – the iconic finale to our journey, where you will stay the night at the Hotel City, Zermatt.

HOTEL CITY, ZERMATT

A last morning of off-piste skiing across the Zermatt and Cervinia ski areas, before catching the train back to Martigny after lunch, where you will return to where you stayed your first night at the Hotel Campanules in Martigny.

After  good food, and an overnight stay at the Hotel, it is now the end of the holiday, and you will need to checkout from approximately 0900 (this will be confirmed by your hotel upon check in).

  • The 410km of pistes extend across four valleys and are littered with classic off piste routes

    – such as the Tortin, the Vallon d’Arbi, Mont Fort and Mont Gelé – Verbier really is as good as it gets for expert skiers. Just be sure to grab first lifts after new snow as its reputation is not secret and the best routes track out quickly. This doesn’t mean that intermediates shouldn’t visit however, as there are plenty of on piste options spread across the mountain.
Verbier itself sprawls out over a sunny plateau and is made up mostly of smart hotels and luxury chalets so if you’re looking to visit on a budget, Le Châble or Nendaz might make better bases. Après ski in Verbier is perhaps the best in Switzerland, with the action starting on the slopes before moving later on into town.
By far the best way to make the most of the town (we meet each evening in T-Bar) and find out the best ways to explore the slopes is by utilising the Ski Club Rep Service – in resort this season between December and April.
There will also be Instructor led Guiding services available to members in Verbier, you can book through our New Generation booking system.
Be sure to also check out the Ski Club’s Verbier Facebook Group to see the latest condition updates and to meet up with fellow members when you arrive. We also have a dedicated group on the Ski Club App!

    • Lively, varied nightlife and some great après ski
    • Some areas can get overcrowded and powder gets tracked fast
    • The lift system doesn’t link up completely in places
    • Some long, hilly walks from accommodation to lifts in places
