Bonneval sur Arc

Bonneval is an authentic and typically Savoyard village at the head of the valley with a charming group of old stone houses with slate roofs and wooden balconies.

It is the highest village in the Maurienne. On the fringes, the Glacier des Evettes is a friendly, well run 2-star hotel but otherwise there is little else in the village.

The ski area is situated between 1850m and 3000m. It has 25km of terrain to explore and 10 lifts serving it. There are nursery slopes beside the old village, and not far away is an area of tasteful modern development at Tralenta, where a drag serves a little nursery slope and a slow chair goes up to further beginner slopes above the treeline (2050m), with a tiny restaurant.

On the Slopes

From there, half a dozen drags and slow chairs reaching 3000m serve good but very limited intermediate pistes. The pisted terrain can be explored in a day or two but it is the off piste which really makes Bonneval. It is plentiful and varied and is enough to keep skiers and boarders occupied for days. The off piste terrain can be found on two flanks of the Pointe d’Andange, including runs of 1150m vertical to the valley bottom. The altitude and many north-facing slopes ensure that the snow stays in good condition long after the snow conditions in most resorts have deteriorated.

Another significant feather in the cap of Bonneval is that it is quiet and you are therefore able to ski freely on the slopes or off piste. Should you fancy exploring a bigger or busier area then there’s plenty more skiing further down the valley. There are seven villages altogether at the base of the Maurienne, providing access to more than 125km of skiable terrain, including Val Cenis which has 56 runs to explore. All the villages are accessible by a free shuttle bus.
