For rustic, quiet Swiss charm in a ski region known for its hustle and bustle, Champery is a great option.

The resort has direct access into the Portes du Soleil and its 600km of slopes, with particularly quick access into the runs above Morzine and Avoriaz. Unfortunately, there’s no run back down to town, so you’ll either have to download the main gondola or ski down to the base of Grand Paradis a little up the valley and catch the bus back down.

As mentioned, the village itself is very pretty and traditionally Swiss, with cosy restaurants serving up hearty fondues and raclettes and family-run hotels dominating the scene. Getting here is very easy from Geneva – the drive takes around an hour and a half whilst the train takes a little over two hours.

The New Year dawns fine, dry and bright across the Swiss Alps with high pressure lingering across central and western Europe. This will change, however, as the week concludes with cold and unsettled conditions moving in from the East. Around 40cm of snowfall can then be expected over the whole region.

This will begin on Friday, before around a foot falls on higher ground over Saturday. The freezing line will hover around 2,000m, however this will plummet on Sunday meaning the last tail of this snowfall hits all elevations. Conditions then remain bitterly cold into the new week with more snowfall expected.
