giving access to one of Austria’s top intermediate ski areas, stretching for miles across the north side of the Tux Valley.
The lift system is very impressive, with new 6-seater and 8-seater chairlifts, plus a whole host of gondolas dominating. However, aside from the infamous Harikari piste, there is little to challenge advanced and expert skiers, unless the park is your thing – the Penken Park is world-renowned. Snow reliability is usually good, but it is worth remembering that the Hintertux Glacier – home to 365-day skiing – sits a short bus ride away up the valley.
The village itself is small, with accommodation mostly in family-run hotels in the village centre, but there are some guesthouses and apartments on the south side of the river. If you’re looking for a greater choice of food, drink and après it is worth heading down the valley to Mayrhofen – the bus ride is only 10 minutes. Getting here is easy from Innsbruck, with the transfer by road taking around an hour.

Updated 07/04
Austria’s crescendo to the 2025/26 season looks set to continue through this week, as cooler temperatures (at least compared to the rest of the Alps) brings with it a few last flurries of snow.
Spring freeze-thaw cycles will be in force, but the freezing line will drop to 2,000m overnight and rising up to 3,000m in the midday sun. This will settle slightly on Friday when a pocket of unsettled weather moves in; the west will see a few flurries, barely enough to register on the snowstake, with up to 5cm falling the further east you travel. With the freezing line being where it is, this will limit snowfall to higher ground.
A few more flurries are due into the new week, albeit it remains too early to tell exactly how much, when, and where will fall.
