Isola 2000

Located a mere 90km from the French Riviera and the city of Nice, the resort of Isola 2000 is great for a sun-filled weekend skiing break.

Its location, right on the Italian border and only an hour and half from Nice Airport gives Isola 2000 a pretty unique location.

But don’t worry if you think the southerly location will cause issue with the snow conditions – the resort is high enough and boasts a good snowmaking network. The runs best suit intermediate skiers, but there is also a very good learner area and in good snow, there is some decent steeper terrain and off piste to be found.

Although the resort itself is not particularly pretty, the purpose-built apartment blocks and hotel are great value and very convenient – the ski slopes run right outside for maximum ski in ski out potential.

On the Slopes

Gentle beginner pistes run directly past much of the accommodation, where several draglifts help to form a decent learning area. From here it is not great progression on to longer runs, with the rest of the terrain – comprised mostly a network of blues and reds – suitable for confident intermediates.

For more advanced skiers and boarders, there is some steeper terrain by the Merlier and Mene chairlifts, but there is a reliance here on fresh powder for those looking for more of a challenge.

In the Resort

For purpose built convenience there are few resorts that are better than Isola 2000. Most of the accommodation is ski in ski out and there are a lot of great value self catered apartments to choose from. Sadly however, the resort’s designers did not create architectural masterpieces and the resort is a bit of an eyesore.

There are a handful of bars and restaurants to choose from, but many of the visitors here tend to stick to self-catering, meaning it is pretty quiet in the evenings. Off the slopes, activities are fairly limited, but snowshoe hikes and cross country skiing are on offer and for those looking for something more relaxing there is a yoga and wellness centre.

Nice is the closest airport, with the drive taking around 90 minutes.
