Access from the town of Kaprun to the glacier slopes above was transformed in 2019/20 by the building of the new K-onnection gondola,
linking the local Maiskogel pistes to the snowsure, lofty runs above. This has now cut out the need to drive up the valley to the base of the glacier access lift and makes skiing back to your accommodation a possibility. The Maiskogel slopes will keep you busy for a morning, with the main attraction lying higher up. Here, the snowsure glacier slopes reach 3029m and there’s a good network of blues and reds, plus a couple of steeper slopes lower down that include the renowned Black Mamba piste.
The village itself is a very convenient base, with lots of accommodation a very short walk from the Maiskogel gondola. There are some decent bars and restaurants too, plus there’s the option of visiting Zell am See which is very nearby and home to livelier après ski and a bigger choice of dining options. The drive from Salzburg is quick, taking less than an hour and half.

Steady snowfall continues for much of Austria, helping relieve what has so-far been an historically bad season. Main ski areas to the west will receive around 20cm of snowfall across most elevations, helped as the freezing line plummets to sea level overnight into Wednesday. Flurries will continue throughout Wednesday with plenty of cloud around, and temperatures rising as the freezing line recovers to 2,000m.
Another belt of snow will come in over Thursday bringing around a foot of snow to areas across the country – north and south of the main alpine ridge. The freezing line will hover around 1,500m meaning upper elevations will get the best of this snow, but cool mornings and evenings will result in snow reaching most elevations.
Things remain cold as the week wraps up, with the threat of sunshine becoming stronger in easterly areas. Snow however continues well into the weekend, with sunday promising excellent skiing conditions across the region.
