There are 70km of slopes in the Katschberg ski area,
located on the Aineck and Tschaneck Mountains, either side of the Katschberg Pass. Most of the slopes are tree-lined, making this a great resort for bad weather and with 100% snowmaking coverage, the resort guarantees good snow cover throughout the season. With most of them rated red and black, this isn’t a resort for beginners, but confident intermediates upwards will love the terrain, especially after fresh snow. Access is quick thanks to a good, modern lift system.
The village itself is relatively small and its location at 1641m means you’re at a snowsure altitude. There’s also the option of staying at the other end of the ski area at St Margarethen im Lungnau, a pretty valley town with access via gondola to the main slopes. Off the slopes there’s some good winter walking routes and a toboggan trail. Getting here is quick and easy, with the route from Salzburg taking less than an hour and a half.

Spring conditions dominate across the Austrian Alps through this week, as high pressure brings fine, dry and bright conditions across the region. Temperatures will yo-yo in a typical spring freeze-thaw pattern, the freezing line dropping to 500m overnight but rising to just shy of 2,000m in the midday sun.
Cloud and more unsettled weather brings with it some snow through this weekend, the best of which will be in the east of the country; around 15cm will fall from Saturday into Sunday, but with the oscillations of the freezing line settling around 1,500 this will mean that this snowfall will favour upper slopes. Western areas will see around 5cm.
More unsettled weather is due for the new week, although it remains too far out to fully see how much snow, when and where.
