The next door neighbour to Kitzbühel is linked to its big brother via lift and piste, making it a great, cheaper and quieter alternative.

If you're looking for a quieter place to stay away from the hustle and bustle of Kitzbühel, look no further than Kirchberg.

You get the same access to the world-renowned 188km of slopes, impressive modern lift system and varied terrain, plus getting to the slopes is quicker than ever thanks to the construction of the new Fleckalmbahn gondola. The pistes offer something for everyone, just note that absolute beginners will need to get the bus round to Kitzbühel to access the nursery slopes.

In contrast to the lively après, vibrant nightlife and vast array of bars and restaurants in Kitzbühel, Kirchberg is quieter. That being said, there’s still a good range of accommodation on offer (which is generally cheaper than in the main town) and a decent selection of bars and restaurants. Off the slopes there’s some nice winter walking trails and the toboggan route on Gaisberg is very popular. Access from Innsbruck and Salzburg is very quick and easy – the drive from either takes around an hour and a half.

After a pretty desperate season, bumper conditions finally – finally – arrive for Austria, as it experiences its first Nortstau event of the season through the middle of this week.

Unsettled conditions drifting in from the north will bring with it cold temperatures as the freezing line takes a long walk off a short pier; from a daytime high of 2,400m on Wednesday it will plummet to sea level by Friday morning.

These unsettled conditions will of course mean snow, with good snowfall hitting the Austrian Alps on Wednesday afternoon and continuing steadily until Friday morning; this will see around 45cm fall, particularly focused across higher ground as the freezing line works its way down the elevation chart steadily over this period. Around 25cm will fall on Thursday alone.

Expect the avalanche risk to increase over this period as this new snowfall sits on either wet ground, wet snow, or a spring freeze-thaw crust; plan your backcountry routes carefully, and check your local avalanche forecast before heading out.

Sun returns with gusto on Saturday, before the last few flurries of cloud and snow move in over Sunday and the new week.
