The 450m vertical drop from the top of Mt Terako ensures long runs from the summit down to the base lodge, via either blues or blacks.
All of which are kept in good shape thanks to the ski area’s four groomers. After fresh snowfall there is some decent off piste available, which expands further if you’re willing to hike a little for your turns, plus for freestylers there’s a well-built terrain park. For beginners, there are good options in the aptly-named Paradise Valley, with decent greens and friendly ski school on hand to help develop your skills.
There’s no accommodation up on the hill, but a number of small lodging and hut options can be found nearby in the picturesque village of Lyford. Otherwise Mt Lyford is a daytrip destination, with the likes of nearby Hanmer Springs and Nelson Lakes National Parks popular destinations to tie in to a roadtrip. Access from Christchurch is fairly simple – the drive takes around 2 hours.
