The local slopes at Elfer directly above the village of Neustift are home to a couple of draglifts and a long gondola,

giving access to some well groomed pistes – ideal for a quick morning blast. There’s also two of Austria’s best sledding runs, both hitting 8km in length and one of them is floodlit for the nighttime. Further up the valley, the Stubai Glacier is around 20 minutes away and is home to one of the biggest and best glacial ski areas in the Alps.

Accessed via the impressive Eisgrat 3S gondola, the 42km of blue and red slopes are an early, late and also mid-season paradise for people looking to develop their skills. The lift system is very good and the world-famous Stubai Zoo Park is one of the best in the world.

Neustift itself is a quiet village nestled in the deep Stubai Valley, with traditional old buildings and small, family run hotels dominating the accommodation on offer. There’s lots of winter walking trails, cross country routes and off slope activities, including the aforementioned toboggan runs at Elfer. Access from Innsbruck could not be easier – head directly south and you’ll be in Neustift within half an hour.

After a pretty desperate season, bumper conditions finally – finally – arrive for Austria, as it experiences its first Nortstau event of the season through the middle of this week.

Unsettled conditions drifting in from the north will bring with it cold temperatures as the freezing line takes a long walk off a short pier; from a daytime high of 2,400m on Wednesday it will plummet to sea level by Friday morning.

These unsettled conditions will of course mean snow, with good snowfall hitting the Austrian Alps on Wednesday afternoon and continuing steadily until Friday morning; this will see around 45cm fall, particularly focused across higher ground as the freezing line works its way down the elevation chart steadily over this period. Around 25cm will fall on Thursday alone.

Expect the avalanche risk to increase over this period as this new snowfall sits on either wet ground, wet snow, or a spring freeze-thaw crust; plan your backcountry routes carefully, and check your local avalanche forecast before heading out.

Sun returns with gusto on Saturday, before the last few flurries of cloud and snow move in over Sunday and the new week.
