The 32.5km of slopes are located on the east-facing slopes of Hochalm, rising from the valley floor at 950m to the summit at 2175m.
Three gondolas serve most of the terrain, with a couple of drags also serving beginner-friendly, tree-lined pistes at the top of the access gondola. If the snow is good, it is possible to ski right back down to the valley at the end of the ski day, but beware that early or late in the season you may need to download at the end of the day. Ski touring is a big attraction here, with uphill routes marked on the piste map and good options from the top of the lifts.
Rauris itself is small village situated within a quiet, dead-end valley over the ridge to the west from the bigger, better-know Gastein Valley. There are good facilities in the village, including a number of shops, bars and restaurants, all of which are a stone’s throw from the accommodation and the foot of the access gondola. Everywhere is walkable and there is alternative access to the slopes from the northern end of the village via the Kreuzbodenbahn – which is also host to a great tobogganing route. Getting here is quick and easy from Salzburg, with the drive taking a little over an hour.

After a pretty desperate season, bumper conditions finally – finally – arrive for Austria, as it experiences its first Nortstau event of the season through the middle of this week.
Unsettled conditions drifting in from the north will bring with it cold temperatures as the freezing line takes a long walk off a short pier; from a daytime high of 2,400m on Wednesday it will plummet to sea level by Friday morning.
These unsettled conditions will of course mean snow, with good snowfall hitting the Austrian Alps on Wednesday afternoon and continuing steadily until Friday morning; this will see around 45cm fall, particularly focused across higher ground as the freezing line works its way down the elevation chart steadily over this period. Around 25cm will fall on Thursday alone.
Expect the avalanche risk to increase over this period as this new snowfall sits on either wet ground, wet snow, or a spring freeze-thaw crust; plan your backcountry routes carefully, and check your local avalanche forecast before heading out.
Sun returns with gusto on Saturday, before the last few flurries of cloud and snow move in over Sunday and the new week.
