The Ski Club’s Representative (Rep) Service will operate in resort, featuring two Reps. They’ll begin the season in early December and will be there until early April. Our Zermatt Facebook Group is incredibly active, with regular meet ups (both on and off snow!) planned by the 350+ members of the online Ski Club community. Our Zermatt group on the Ski Club App is your new home for the 2023/24 season, with regular updates and conversations from your Ski Club Reps and members in resort! There are four Freshtracks holidays visiting the resort this season, including the ever-popular Ski and Schnapps Peak Experience trips, a late-season powder adventure and a telemark weekend in April.
The main beginner area (with magic carpets and rope tows) is at Leisee, just below Sunnegga. There’s special pass to get you to and from that area and allow you to ski the blue run down to Findeln, but other than that progression to longer runs is difficult and the slopes are challenging for near-beginners.
Easier blue runs can be found in the Riffelberg area connecting with the Gifthittli chair. Skiers can return to the village on the train from this area.
Where to start? The choice is almost limitless, with 295km of blues and reds Zermatt is one big playground for intermediates. Head to the snowsure runs on the glacier on a sunny day and drop over into Italy to Cervinia, where the rolling terrain is perfect cruising territory. Long reds can also be found by the Hirli chairlift and you can rack up over 1,000m of on-piste vertical from both the Rothorn and Hohtälli cable cars on runs that are often very quiet.
There is some great off piste when conditions are right, and the off piste itineraries include some excellent runs. The high altitude preserves the snow well, especially on the north-facing slopes, but much of the terrain is very rocky so a lot of the best itineraries need a few months of snow to fill in each winter. Ask your rep about hiring a mountain guide. The Skiguide Zermatt app (which is excellent) shows which itinerary runs are open as well as the status of the lifts and pistes.
The resort is a mixture of ancient chalets and barns, grand 19th-century hotels and modern buildings, most in a traditional style. The oldest, most charming part of the village has narrow lanes and old wooden barns with slate roofs, but the resort now stretches a long way down the valley. It can feel busy, especially on the main street, but there is always a real buzz about the place – just watch out for the electric taxis that nip around the town.
The cost, the general inconvenience of the place and the challenges facing beginners and near-beginners make for what is not an ideal family destination.
There are lots of facilities for younger children in town, but to get the best out of the resort, we’d recommend coming when the kids are a bit older so they can really make the most of the vast ski area.
There’s a good mix of sophisticated and informal fun, though it definitely helps if you have deep pockets. There are lively places on the mountain including Hennu Stall and Cervo at the base of the return run from Sunnegga.
Back in town you can’t beat the Ski Club’s social hour at the Hotel Pollux bar – get there early to get a good seat and keep your dinner plans flexible as the hour has been known to extend to several…
Zermatt is located right at the end a deep alpine valley and cars are only allowed past Täsch if you’re a resident – a Park+Ride service is offered Taesch station with trains, buses and taxis available. The best way to get there is via the train – it is just under four hours from Geneva and around three and a half from both Zürich and Basel; all routes require a change at Visp for the local service up the valley, via the Park+Ride station at Täsch, to Zermatt station which is located in the heart of the village.
Plan your journey online via the SBB Railways website.
There are two rates available, a Zermatt-only pass and a pass covering the whole Internartional Ski Area including Zermatt, Cervinia, Valtourneche, and others. A Zermatt-only pass is more than sufficient for most intermediate skiers, but the extra opportunity to explore into Italy cannot be missed for experts and those who want to explore – single or multi-day extensions to Zermatt-only tickets are available if desired.
Children up to 9 years old ski for free.

Updated 24/03
the first Nordstau of the season (in late March, would you believe it) is set to bring excellent conditions across particularly eastern reaches of the country through the middle of this week. Unsettled conditions moving in from the north plummet temperatures, with the freezing line taking a long walk off a short pier through this period; dropping from a daytime high above 2,000m on Wednesday to sea level overnight into Friday.
With this unsettled weather will come excellent snowfall; the west will see useful top ups of around 20cm falling on Wednesday afternoon and throughout Thursday, whereas the east will see bumper conditions with up to 2ft expected down at the same time. This will peak on Thursday, when c.50cm is expected down over higher ground.
Expect the avalanche forecast to climb over this period, as this new snow may well be sitting on a spring freeze-thaw crust and/or a very wet snowpack thanks to spring melt.
Things will return to a more spring-like norm as the weekend arrives, with spring freeze-thaw cycles in play and plenty of sun; a few lingering clouds will bring snowfall on Sunday and into the new week, but it remains a bit too far out to say exactly how much will fall, when, and where.

The morning meeting point and time, and social hour venue will vary; please check with the Rep via the Zermatt Facebook group, Ski Club App, or directly using the contact number.
Your Ski Club Reps are in resort for one reason only; to help you discover better skiing. They are your personal resort gurus, with years of experience skiing here and around the world, who will bring you and your fellow Members together to conquer the mountain! Stay up to date with everything in resort, find the best spots for an après beer, and ski to your heart’s content.
Please note that two Reps reps are in resort at the same, time, accommodating for the large community we have in Zermatt – you may notice only one Rep listed for certain periods below, as we wait to confirm the second Rep for these slots.
Our Reps will be in resort between 13 December 2025 and 3 April 2026, skiing six days a week – Reps’ day off/changeover day is Saturday in this resort. Log your upcoming trip to Zermatt now via the “My Trips” function on the Ski Club App to let your Rep know when you’ll be in resort. Having wandered the world with a backpack for several years in my 20's, I found myself staying with friends in the French Alps one winter with nothing much planned and simply fell in love with everything about the skiing lifestyle. Doing everything I could to prolong the visit, including washing thousands of pans, shovelling tonnes of snow and living in a broom cupboard! I realised I was hooked.
Alas, real life intervened and back to Blighty to pursue a career in IT, with skiing trips a much longed-for highlight. A lovely Freshtracks week with an awesome Ski Club Rep and local guide persuaded me to have a go at the Rep. course myself and, well, here I am! I am keen on most mountain sports, but apart from skiing I love to hike, canoe, paraglide, climb Via Ferrata, and ride my bikes - both pedal and powered.
I learnt to ski in Snowdonia. I love meeting new people and helping them get the most of their ski holiday. I spent as much time as possible in the mountains in winter and summer.
