Taos remains a somewhat old school ski resort, with the ski terrain very much the focus.

Recent investment however has seen the resort build its first fast chairlift and invest in snowmaking, ensuring the snow conditions remain reliable, despite the resort’s southerly location in the Rio Grande valley.

There’s a good selection of long green and blue runs, as well as a few groomed blacks, but much of the attraction here is the steep terrain accessed off Kachina Peak and the main ridgeline that runs from north to south above the ski area. You’ll have to be prepared to hike up, but the chutes, bowls and tree runs are well worth the effort! At the foot of the mountain there’s a decent range of condo accommodation and a number of restaurants and bars, however the resort is usually pretty quiet at night.

Alternatively you can stay down in the valley, but for maximum convenience we’d recommend staying up on the hill. Tie in a trip here with a visit to Angel Fire resort, or the Colorado resorts of the San Juan Mountains – such as Telluride, Purgatory or Silverton.

The sad demise of Left Coast skiing continues this week, with more resorts shuttering with each passing day in the wake of what is now officially a record-low snowpack in Utah. Temperatures remain mild throughout this forecast period across the Rockies, PNW, and Tetons, with a few bursts of rain along the way.

Things may turn colder into the weekend with a few flurries of snow, but whether there is a snowpack left for this to boost is anyone’s guess.

Out on the Ice Coast, things start this period cold and snowy, but rapidly turn mild as the freezing line leaps over tall buildings in a single bound. Things will fluctuate slightly, plus a flurry of rain in to start the weekend to keep things interesting.
