Known as one of the Alps’ snowiest resorts with an average of over 10m of snowfall each winter, Damüls/Mellau is rightfully gaining more recognition amongst British skiers and snowboarders.

The 80km of slopes mostly suit intermediates, but thanks to the plentiful snowfall and around 18km of marked off piste ski routes, this is also an excellent resort for advanced skiers looking for their powder fix.
With the option to base yourself either in the valley at Mellau (linked to the ski area via gondola) or in Damüls further up the mountain putting you right in the heart of the action, there is something for every type of guest.

On the Slopes
Although it is not the highest as it only tops out at 2050m, the microclimate provided by its location near the Bodensee on the northern edge of the Alps means it has one of the best snow records of any Alpine ski resort. An impressive and ever-improving lift system whisks skiers and boarders up to these snowsure slopes.
Beginners are very well catered for on the edge of Damüls itself and also at the top of the Mellaubahn gondola. Progression on to longer blues is good, particularly under the new Oberdamüls six-pack chairlift. Intermediates have a great choice of groomed runs, although longer routes are hard to come by – vertical drops of less than 500m dominate here. It is then during powder days when the resort and the marked ski routes come alive for advanced and expert skiers and riders, but even without fresh snow there are some decent blacks beneath the Suttis chair.
Getting to Damuls/Mellau
Friedrichshafen is the nearest airport and the drive takes just over an hour, with Memmingen airport is around an hour and a half away. With more regular flights than the former two, Zürich can be reached in around two hours, whilst Munich and Innsbruck are both two and a half hours away.

After a pretty desperate season, bumper conditions finally – finally – arrive for Austria, as it experiences its first Nortstau event of the season through the middle of this week.
Unsettled conditions drifting in from the north will bring with it cold temperatures as the freezing line takes a long walk off a short pier; from a daytime high of 2,400m on Wednesday it will plummet to sea level by Friday morning.
These unsettled conditions will of course mean snow, with good snowfall hitting the Austrian Alps on Wednesday afternoon and continuing steadily until Friday morning; this will see around 45cm fall, particularly focused across higher ground as the freezing line works its way down the elevation chart steadily over this period. Around 25cm will fall on Thursday alone.
Expect the avalanche risk to increase over this period as this new snowfall sits on either wet ground, wet snow, or a spring freeze-thaw crust; plan your backcountry routes carefully, and check your local avalanche forecast before heading out.
Sun returns with gusto on Saturday, before the last few flurries of cloud and snow move in over Sunday and the new week.
