Forecast today: Generally clear
The traditional Swiss mountain village is more picturesque and quieter than its near neighbour Zermatt, but there is still a great selection of accommodation, bars and restaurants to choose from. Off slope activities are extremely popular in Saas-Fee – in fact the whole Hannig Mountain and its gondola is set aside for tobogganers, winter walkers, cross-country skiers and snowshoers.
Whilst the slopes may not be as extensive as elsewhere, the snow conditions are usually fantastic and lots of vertical is on offer. The other local areas of Saas-Grund and Saas-Almagell are each more than worthy of day trips, especially if the exposed upper slopes are closed by wind or heavy snowfall.
There’s a fantastic and large nursery area at the edge of the village – covered by a cheap pass. It is in the sunnier part of town but snow reliability is not an issue as it is fully equipped with snow machines. From there good progression is possible on the slopes between Felskinn and Morenia and also on the slopes of Kreuzboden above Saas-Grund.
The reds high on the glacier hold on to consistently great snow and are great for practicing your technique, but ideally on a sunny day. Further down the mountain, the long descents from Längfluh are popular and the Plattjen area should not be ignored for its underused runs. If you’re looking for mile after mile of piste the local slopes may seem slightly limited, but adding day trips to the outlying ski areas or even to Zermatt should keep most more than happy.
This is not an ideal resort for experts, particularly those wishing to stick within the resort boundaries. Few blacks are marked on the piste map and although there are now 5km of itinerary routes, the rocky and glacial terrain limits the off piste options. That being said, if you’re a competent ski tourer then Saas-Fee makes for a fantastic base from which to explore the spectacular peaks towering over the valley.
Although it has grown from its humble beginnings, Saas-Fee retains a lot of character and old cow sheds are still dotted around in and amongst the more modern hotels and chalets. It is slightly spread out, but this makes it a great place to wander around after a day of skiing – be sure to stop off in one of cosy bars for a glühwein. The only major issue is a lack of sun in midwinter – it is definitely at its best towards spring time.
The village of Saas-Fee is ideal for families, especially as the nursery slopes are so good. There’s lots to do away from the slopes and a day spent tobogganing is highly recommended – there are excellent trails at Hannig, above Saas-Grund and down into Saas-Almagell.
Although it is a great family resort, there is a decent après scene, especially on the terraces along the main street of the town. Yes it isn’t cheap, but the likes of the Black Bull are popular haunts for a post-skiing beer.
Getting to Saas-Fee is an easy combination of catching a train to Visp, before changing to the bus departing up the valley to the resort itself. It takes around 3 hours from Zürich and 3.5 hours from Geneva and Basel, check out the timetable on the Swiss Railway System’s website. Driving is an option but double check that your accommodation has free parking and note you’ll need to park outside the car-free village.
Updated for 2024/25
Each village in the Saas Valley has its own lift pass; alternatively, you can purchase a whole area pass (Destination Ski Pass) which covers Saas-Fee, Saas-Grund, Saas-Almagell and Sass-Balen. Children up to 6 years of age ski for free.
Don’t forget your Ski Club membership card to load your ski passes on to, either online or at the ticket office.

Spring conditions dominate across the Swiss Alps through this week, as high pressure brings fine, dry and bright conditions across the region. Temperatures will yo-yo in a typical spring freeze-thaw pattern, the freezing line dropping to 500m overnight but rising to 2,000m in the midday sun.
Cloud and more unsettled weather brings with it some snow through this weekend, the best of which will be in the east of the country; around 15cm will fall from Saturday into Sunday, but with the oscillations of the freezing line settling around 1,500 this will mean that this snowfall will favour upper slopes. Western areas will see around 5cm.
Conditions will continue to be cloudy into the new week with the chance of more snowfall, but it remains a bit too far out to suggest how much, where and when.
